what wheels for awd/v70 (not x country) V70-XC70 2002

In buying a 2002 AWD (Not cross country) I am told by the dealer that the optional 17 inch wheels are the only models he can get...and if I put 16 inch wheels on it...the brakes, the odometer, etc will be all wrong since the factory changes it all depending upon what wheels it is shipped with...is that so...and what wheels would people suggest....Im afraid of driving in NY potholes with 17 inch wheels; am I wrong.....pluto (HMOEST@aol.com)
