Anyone have a clue? 850 1996

The other day I was stopped at a stop light. Ok nothing unusual about that but when the light turned green I go to take the left handed turn to where I was going when out of no where the WHOLE car just shuts off EVERYTHING is off. Thankfully I had just enough speed to get to the side of the road. Now I know that this can't be to good and it has NEVER happened before. My check engine light has been on for quite a while and its obvious this is why the car did that. But anyone have a clue why the car might just shut off?? It started right back up again like nothing happened but I would like to get this fixed as soon as possible. I'll be getting that new obdII sensor from IPD soon so i'll be able to get some codes from it. But if you have the slighest clue on why my car would do this I would greatly appreciate it.
