V70T5 1999 oil consumption V70-XC70

I have a V70 T5 (47k miles) that burns a quart of oil per 1000 miles. This
is the situation since it was new. I checked our FAQ here and I saw
reports of 1 quart per 2000 miles as normal. I took the car to a Volvo
shop (Independent Volvo Service in Walnut Creek) and they detected 25%
lower compression on one of the cylinders. They say that this is the
cause of the high oil burn. I talked to the dealership where I bought the
car and they say that the oil burn that I see is normal. Volvo USA also
confirms that this is normal but they can quote any specs or consumer
reports. I somehow can't believe this.

Can anybody confirm/deny this or point me to a reliable source of
information?
