Here in Montreal Canada, I found it very difficult to get a straight answer from some
of the so-called “Volvo” experts.
When asked “What is the procedure regarding an automatic transmission oil flush?” I never get the same answer twice!
First mechanic said, “ A simple four liter drain and refill will do”
Another said “a transmission flush using a machine that will change approx. 14 liters”
Another said “a transmission flush using a machine that will change approx. 5 liters”
Another said, “ Don’t bother. Volvo transmission last forever”
I guess a few procedures may exist and choosing the right one is a judgement call based on experience.
I decided to change the ATF myself using Bay 13’s procedure.
The only question I have is what type or brand name transmission fluid I should use?
Should I purchase the oil from the dealer? What about Castrol, ETC…
Should I use synthetic transmission fluid?
Bay 13 recommends removing the battery and the battery tray. Is this necessary on my 1998 S70?
Once the transmission line is disconnected, what size plug can I use to cap the inlet hole on the trans cooler?
Also, is there an oil ring that should be replaced on the transmission line?
Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Alfredo
