850 stereo installation kit? 850

i have a 96 850. i'm trying to install an alpine head unit. I am getting the dash pocket and the wiring harness no problem, but the service guy says that there is no dash molding i need, rather, they need to manufacture a backstrap to hold the head unit in place to secure it to the car.

is he correct? what do i need to put in a regular single DIN headunit into the 850?
