Radio dial worn out?-what now. 850 1994

I have an 850 wagon. The original radio /on off dial only works on the left channel. The right side of the car is left without sound. If I play with the knob it will sometimes catch and give me full stereo. Is the switch dirty, or worn out and how can I tell the difference? Is there anything to try to get it to work, or is a new system in required? Can you repair/replace just the knob, or do they merely slap in a whole new unit?
Opinions please.
