Synthetic Oil - S70 T5-M S70 1998

I have a '98 S70 T5-M. It has 51,000 miles on it and I'm debating whether or not I should switch to synthetic. I live in Chicago, and it can get pretty damn cold here, but in the summer, it get's pretty damn hot too. With so many miles on the car already, I guess the question is, does it still make sense to switch to synthetic?

If I do switch:
with this many miles on the car, what are the positives of switching....

What, if any, are the negatives? (price....)

Thanks!
