rear light unit $#@t the bed

Here's one I didn't expect. One of my rear light units (holds three bulbs) blinked out. To test the connectors / fuses, I swapped sides. No doubt about it. The unit is dead. This surprises me because the unit seems solidly constructed. Anyone else have experience with this problem?
