Spark Plugs on S70 Turbo S70

How sensitive is the S70 turbo to spark plug brand? I put Autolite plugs in @ 60K and after about 20k miles, I was getting terrible gas milage--under 20mpg on a trip. Volvo recommends changing plugs every 30k. When I went to replace the plugs with NGKs, I noticed that the Autolite's gap had increased to over .040". Do plugs wear out that fast in turbos or is the Autolite brand one to avoid? From now on, I plan to change plugs every 15k and use only NGK.
