smell from the exhaust 850 1992

Hi,

I just bought a used 1992 850 Volvo with 183,000KM. Everytime the engine is running there's a strong smell coming from the exhaust.

Apart from this, the car drives like a dream, and has just passed the compulsory German and the (very strict) French national car control tests.

Does anybody have experience this problem? Do you have any idea what causes the strong smell from the exhaust? I should add that it really does not seem to have anything to do with the air-co, but perhaps I'm wrong.
