850 tire and new speed rating? 850

I was at Sam's last night to buy 2 tires for my 93 850 and the guy said I had to have no lower than V speed rating and he didn't have any there! I asked him why I couldn't put on H or T, and he said it would not work on the Volvo. I thought as long as you stayed with 195/60/15 you're all right? So, i got home and inspected what I did have: on the fronts were Michelin with V rating, which needed to be replaced, and on the rear were Generals with a H rating. Anybody have an insight into the NEW way of buying tires? thanks
