Transmission troubles 850 1993

I have posted here in the past about my '93 Volvo 850; it is now at 86k miles. However, there is now a serious issue that has crept up: it is leaking transmission fluid at the moment, and there is a foul smell that comes out of the underside after a long highway drive. And, the kickdowns from fourth to third gear when passing are harsh and abrupt. I do know for a fact that the auto transmissions in the '93 and '94 models gave owners plenty of trouble. I need some quick advice before I spend a lot of money to get this fixed.
