The check engine light on my '96 850 wagon came on recently.
The symptom - If I had to start the car and go without just a minute of warm up, the car would stumble in Drive and choke on acceleration. Then die. I'd have to wait a minute, restart and let it run for several minutes. The rest of the day it would be fine.
I brought it to my trusted garage.
The code they found pointed to the secondary air injector valve. Apparently it recirculates the rich exhaust at start up back into the intake manifold during the first few minutes of warm up.
According to the garage, they've seen this on a few 850's. The original valve design didn't let water and condensation drain, causing the valve to stick open or shut and eventually fail.
Has any one replaced one of these? What kind or parts or work are involved?
Thanks
James
