malfunction indicator light ... 850 1996

What exactly is the "malfunction indicator light" for? It mentions something
about fuel tank and emissions diagnostic fault. Mine turned on the other day
and it doesn't give any details in the manual.

Mine light is shown as a triangle with a Greek 'lamda' in the middle. It is
the second last light on the bottom row of lights to the right of the
steering wheel when you turn on the ignition.

I have a 96' Volvo 850 GLT

Also does this newsgroup have any FAQ available for quick reference(s)?
