AC cycling - How do I get the most out of my expiring VIP warranty? 850 1997

My VIP warranty covers compressor, evaporator, etc. I bought it nearly three years ago and never had to use it. Now the AC is cycling and I am afraid they will just recharge the unit to tide me over until the warranty expires, perhaps not intentionally but that may be how it works out. Any suggestions beyond going with the recharge and hoping it leaks out in the next month so I can go back in before the warranty expires?
