tire rotation S40-V40

How often do you rotate your tires (i.e. exchange fronts with rears)? What is the benefit to doing this? I don't see much benefit to rotating tires but I know people do it. If you don't do this it seems like the only thing you have to do is replace the front tires before the rears. Is it bad to have new tires up front and worn tires in the back?
