850 Pollen filter and ECC question ... 850 1994

I gather the 850 has electronic climate control - where is the ECC unit located, and does this interface with the heater to provide automatic temperature control ?

Being unfamiliar with a/c - does the evaporator get clogged with dirt / dust etc. if the car is not fitted with a "pollen filter" ??? I remember a friend saying his Toyota evap. was clogged with dust. My A/C is not working particularly well, and before I attempt to have it serviced (damn near impossible here in Thailand - nobody has a clue how to do anything) I woild lioke to try the obvious things myself.
