850 overheated, head gasket??? Immediate thoughts???

Hello

I have a 1993 850 GLT. It was bought kowing that the below problem/s had happened:

The previous owner bought it, picked it up from a transport and within 5 miles of coming home, it overheated...redlined. He pulled it into a Pep Boys and the concensus was a headgasket..it was blowing fluid (although I did not find out from where) Aftet is cooled down, he drove a total of 8-9 miles to his mechanic (a Volvo man) who did not tear it down. This man, too, thought head gasket and possibly something in the cooling system.

SO, I now own it and have checked to see if there is milkshake in the oil reserve..none. However, I am not a mechanic...so what myself and a pal who IS an excellent shadetree type have done is:

* remove the intakes (front and back)
* remove all other top end parts
* loosened the top end bolts

We left it there to return to the coming weekend. Any suggestions? We assume the gasket is bad and willbe checking the head for cracks/warping...but I just wanted to throw this out to anyone who might have savvy advice.
Thanks in advance and I CAN take and post pics of what IS there for interested parties.
Regards-
Scott
