Best way to record MPG??? 850

I'm wondering what's the best way to record the MPG on my '95 854 Turbo. The gas guage seems to drop very quickly. Should I fill up a full tank then drive it, and when I refill check the odometer and divide it to get MPG? Is that an accurate way of figureing out my MPG?
