coolant smell in cabin 850 1995

in the last 4 months I've had about 4 ounces (maybe 3/4 inch) of antifreeze vanish, and I periodically notice the smell of antifreeze in the cabin, car has almost 90,000 miles on it

I notice the smell when I go from max cool setting on the climate control (has ACC) to just a little above it, and if I turn the fan & system off, the smell then fades.

do I have a heater core replacement in my future or is there another reason for the symptoms?
