Rims with caked on brake dust, how to clean them? 850

I have a set of 16" rims that have serious caked on brake dust. I have tried some spray on rim cleaner and have removed the light stuff but have been unable to get off the really hard black buildup. Does anyone know of a product that you can use to clean your rims that does not harm the finish?
