I replaced the timing belt on my '93 850, 75K mile 20V N/A, over the weekend and found that the old belt had the exhaust cam 1 tooth advanced beyond its proper position. I must have spun the engine 10 times to be positive I was seeing the old belt off by exactly one tooth. The dealer had replaced the original belt 5 years/25K miles ago before I bought the car from them.
For the new belt I moved the exhaust cam CCW one tooth to put it in alignment and it starts and runs fin·. The idle may be a little bit smoother and it may be a little more powerful but nothing very obvious.
Its hard to believe a dealer tech would be that sloppy considering the good reputation this dealer has. Are there any emissions/power/torque/tech-bulletin reasons for setting the exhaust cam off intentionally? Think any damage could have been done?
