Air conditioner V70-XC70

Hi,

I was wondering on the V70 if the airconditioner button is on and the temperature set is lower than the ambient temperature inside the car would the system switch off the air conditioner even if the button were "ON". On a recent trip when the desired temperature was reached the fan seemed to slow down but I could still feel the air conditioner working. Am I correct?
