How can I tell if it's the evaporator or just needs a charge? 850 1997

My AC stopped working. After hearing all the horror stories about the evaporator I was wondering how to tell if that's the culprit. There was NO cold air coming out today and the engine didn't change sound when I switched tha AC on like it usually does. Any advice?
