Shims on front brake pads necessary? 850 1995

I recently replaced the front brake pads and rotors on my 95 850. I noticed that the Haynes manual suggested reusing the shims that were already in place. Since my car has almost 140K on it, any shims that may have been there originally are long since gone now. What was the purpose of the shims and should I install new ones?
