OBDII code readers 850 1997

I am considering buying an OBDII code reader for my 97 850, but I have heard they use a special protocol. Does anyone know how to identify the correct protocol: ISO 9141-2, J1850PWM, J1850VPW, KWP2000, ISO 14230-4, etc??? Whatever I buy, I want to be sure it can shut off the "service engine" light.
