Adaptive gearbox V70-XC70

How easily is the programme of gearbox changes affected. I seldom see the RPM exceed 3000 in my car which is well short of full power level? Is it possible to see or tell where you might be in the range of changes possible? I presume that changes are produced by vigorous or lazy acceleration but I havn't detected any in my car, although that's how things should be perhaps.
