air condition/ evaporator 850 1984

The air conditioner in My 850 turbo, with 80k miles has stopped working. I took it to the dealer and they tell me I need a new ac evaporator core and blower motor. They told me this would cost approximately $1600!!!

Is there any way I can get this done cheaper? WHat other options do I have? Should I try a local mechanic- but how will I know he/she is reliable. I just moved to chicago so I don't know the mechanics here. And it is soooooo HOT here.
