Possible idea for bubbling upholstery on S70/V70's V70-XC70 1998

Of all of the problems that we have had with our '98 XC, the bubbling upholstery problem is, to me, the most troubling. I guess this is because that even though Volvo acknowledges that there was a problem with the glue used to hold on the vinyl, they refuse to cover it under warranty if you are even slightly out of the warranty period. Given that fact that the repair kits are a whopping $279/door, I have spent alot of time brainstorming possible alternatives to fix the unsightly situation.
One idea that I had involves the installation of wooden (finished to match the wood on the dash) inserts that would be shaped to match the door panel cavity. This would be a permanent repair that would basically push the vinyl back against the bottom of the cavity and hold it there while creating a nice, finished look. You would haver to have a cut-out for the door handle. Does this idea seem too far out in left field?
Has anyone else out there thought of any alternatives?

Jeff
