Hose off airbox? 850 1996

Has anyone tried taking off the hose that goes into the exaust from the back of their airbox? Or even adding a new hose to the front of the car, for cooler air? I've heard it makes the car slightly quicker, but I'm wondering if there are any drawbacks..
