S80 gear shifter S80

Recently on my 99 S80, it has been difficult engaging my gear shifting to Reverse or Drive from Park after first starting the car. The shifter appears to be locked until I depress the brake a few times or at least wait 20-30 seconds. At first I just thought it might be stuck, but even joggling the shifter does not help. I suspect it's electronic or software related? Any ideas?

ps. my 99 has 105,000 miles and even though I have had to deal with all the recalls etc; and the local dealer is more like a tin man (not sure who is worse, him or my dog's vet), I am still very happy with the car...
