Auto Transmission Selector Microswitch 850

I was wondering if anyone knew what the Selector Microswitch does on an automatic transmission. The problem I am having is when I shit into drive, the car stays in the neutral position, but if I move the shifter in between Drive and D3, the car runs normal. Is this a microswitch problem, or is my transmission fluid dirty,or a combination of both?
