Fob Programming Didn't Work. 850

I tried several times to reprogram my fob using the "5-turn" technique and it has not been succesful. When I first got the car the alarm had gone off accidentally after arming itself (after leaving it unlocked in the driveway) but I have not been able to duplicate this in some time. I have replaced the battery in both fobs, smacked them around a bit, and tried puting them to my chin (which worked on a previously owned Clifford) but still. What can I check on? Thanks a lot. Stu.
