Antenna woes

Our 1995 base 850 sedan had its antenna broken off in a car wash. (Well at least someone meant well!)

When the car got home I ran the antenna up and recovered all of the nylon strip and all of the antenna except for the largest section.

I cannot remove the last section of the antenna. When I pull it up, it refuses to come out of the base, the blockage feels really solid.

Will removing the antenna mechanism help with this problem?

Any advice?
