Liftgate panel repair kit, help with the panel clips.. 850 1995

I bought the repair kit for my 855's liftgate panel and all went very well until it was time to snap the thing back in place. The kit included new lower clips which I could not get to pop through the holes in the lower edge of the liftgate.

They are identical to the original clips but when I smack or press the panel they just distort instead of popping through the holes. I'll need to buy a bunch more as they're all ruined now.

Any tips on getting these buggers to snap into the gate? I'm driving the car without the panel installed and man is it QUIET!

The repaired upper mounts work great btw,
