One-inch hitch installation on V70? V70-XC70 1999

I would love input from "old" (1998-2000) V70 owners who may have installed a 1" hitch at the bottom rear for the purposes of carrying a bicycle rack.

My wife is determined to have this done and I fear it will be unsightly and possibly cause damage at the rear. My Volvo dealer says there is no official Volvo hitch available for my (1999) car, and suggests we take the car to a local welding shop... yikes!

Are there any aftermarket hitches that you have been particularly happy or unhappy with, either functionally or aesthetically? Can you recommend (or warn against) an installation for a rear bike rack/hitch arrangement?
