Thermostat or Sensor? 850 1993

My still running strong 850 GLT 1993 Sedan
is very slow at reaching proper runnning temperature -
according to the gauge.
But hot air is delivered before the gauge hardly has moved from lowest point.
Are the heat sensor known to fail - or is the cabin heater placed right after the engine water outlet?
Any trick to decide where the fault is?
