Gas Gauge not working new sender unit did not help ? 850 1996

Someone told me that IPD had posted on their web page that it is a magnet on the back of the gauge that my need cleaning.I think it must be a wire of some sort. Can anyone give me their thoughts. Has anyone had this problem ? I replaced the fuel sending unit in the tank but that did not fix it.
