Why does the gas gauge work this way? 850 1996

Greetings,

Was in a hurry the other day while refueling & did not turn the car off. (I forgot about the pot'l check engine light, but it didn't come on.) I know that's something one should not do, but my question is this: The gas gauge did not move (and the trip computer didn't reset it's 'mileage to zero') until I had turned the car off & back on again. Unless I don't understand Volvo's engineering, I thought the gauge was mechanical. Sounds to me like there is some computer interface there. Any ideas what the setup is, and why? Perhaps something to do with the trip computer? As always, thanks a million.
