I took my wife's 1997 850 in for two new tires (Michelin MXV4+) yesterday, and was asked if I wanted an alignment since the new tires were going on the front. The worn tires that were being replaced were on the rear and the ones on the front were fairly new. They looked to be wearing normally and the car tracked straight, so I told them I didn't think it needed an alignment. I have been going to this same tire dealer for about 8 years and dealing with the same salesperson every time and until now I trusted him. He offered to "check" the alignment for free and I authorized an alignment if it was needed. When I picked the car up, the alignment had been done. However, on the before and after printout I received, the only spec that was out of adjustment before the alignment was the toe. The left front showed +0.30 and the right front showed -0.03. The after alignment measurements were +0.18 left and +0.17 right. The acceptable range was listed as +0.12 to +0.22 per side. The total toe measured +0.27 before they aligned it. Couldn't the steering wheel have been moved just slightly to split the +0.27 between the two wheels, and the toe would have been approximately +0.14 on each side, which would have been within the acceptable range? Am I missing something here, or did I get taken for $60? Is this a common scam to make people think their alignment is off?
