About a month ago I posted a message about a "clunk" in the rear end of my '98 V70 R that occured when my speed hit aroung 50mph+.(I had just purchased the car) I had looked at the tires and they were all Michelin Pilots. What I didn't realize was that the 2 front tires were the XGT H4 and the rear were V. Also one rear was almost worn out and the other was fairly new. The 2 front tires were worn on the outsides.
Yesterday I replaced all 4 tires with brand new Pilot XGT H4's and my mysterious "clunk" went away!!!! Today I had the front end aligned and my V70 R is a very happy car.
I stopped by my mechanic and told him and he couldn't believe that the differences in tires and tread had caused the clunking noise. He was just as happy as I was since he couldn't figure out what was causing it. I'm real happy that I changed the tires before I put a bunch of money into the vicious coupling!
This confirms what I have read on this site about even tire wear being very important to the health of the AWD's. Thanks to all the good input that everyone contibutes.
