'95 850 driveshaft/CV joint failure

A friend has had a total failure of the left driveshaft. All was normal until after a stop at a light, the car wouldn't move. Diagnosis was CV joint had failed/broken. Repair: replace driveshaft.

This failure sounds very unusual to me. I have never heard it mentioned. Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Any particular cause identified?
