gasoline smell coming from a/c 850

Help! I just spent another $100 at another garage trying to find out why I get an overwhelming fuel smell from the a/c when I start my 1994 850 with a cold engine. I also get the smell at other times while driving. I have been to the dealer and two independent shops but nobody seems to know what is wrong. The dealer today said my a/c had a hole. Also, I recently replaced my egr value and now shop says it is not working right because the manifold hose is clogged. Estimate to fix is $400. I don't want to get rid of my car (it has 153,000 miles) but it is driving me crazy, not to mention to the poor house.
