brake lights stay on S40-V40

Beginning immediately with a 5-10 MPH front end collision of our S40, the brake lights have remained on. It was the front of our S40 that was damaged, not the rear. We have moved the brake pedal up and down by hand, but the lights stay on. Does anybody know the cause. How do we fix it. We prefer not to have to deal with the dealer just in case its not covered by warranty. Many thanks. D
