fuel economy 2000 vs. 2002 V70 - why big difference? V70-XC70

My new 2002 V70 gets about 15% lower gas mileage, tank after tank than I got with my 99 V70, or than I get with my wife's 2000 V70. The service manager says that since there are no check lights on, everything is optimized. Tire pressure for each is at the economy (high pressure) mfg's spec. All three cars are automatic transmission FWD. Both the 2000 and the 2002 are 5 speed. The new one does weigh almost 300 lbs more, but the final drive ratio is even lower than on the 2000. Is there some correctable cause?
