I purchased my first Volvo last month - a sapphire black 2003 XC90 T6. Upon reading the owners manual I noticed with some surprise that a Volvo synthetic tranmission fluid was specified for the four speed automatic (which is made by General Motors) and that Dexron IIIG was specified for the Volvo five speed automatic. I suspected that the requirements for the two transmissions were reversed. Yesterday (Jan 10 2003), I brought the car to my dealer for a couple minor items and while it was attached to the computer I noticed a subject heading of "Transmission Fluid, XC90" and I asked the Master Tech to open the article for my review. Sure enough, the article (dated Jan 9 2003) stated that the transmission fluid specs were indeed reversed in the owners manual.
The 4 speed GM 4T65 uses Dexron IIIG
The 5 speed AW 55 uses Volvo synthetic fluid (type JWS-3309)
I hope that this post helps someone avoid topping off a transmission with the wrong fluid.
My wife and I are delighted with the vehicle, and we await availability of aftermarket or accessory wheels to equip with winter tires. Suggestions are welcome.
