Diesel V70 - anyone know about them? V70-XC70

I'm normally on the 700 board, but am thinking of getting a V70 (in addition to the 745 which is the best car I've ever owned in 33 years driving). The thing is I'm in the UK and with petrol going up and up (5USD per gallon now), in common with many Europeans I intend to go for diesel. I'm looking at 98/99 V70 TDI models (Audi 2.5 diesel) which may not be available in the USA. They're rare in the UK due to new price and other competition, I think. If anyone has knowledge of this model/engine I'd appreciate comments regarding any issues and with used V70's generally. I'd really like to stick with Volvo, but if I can't find one at the right price the next best diesel for me would be a VW Passat 1.9 TDI, but it's not in the same league, is it?
