Light steering - Steering Fluid? 850

The steering on my 850R seems to have got noticably 'lighter' over the last 12months. However, I've found that if I turn the steering wheel fully between locks a few times, then the steering stiffens up for about 15miles or so and feels much more like it should (stiffer and sharper). Tyre pressures are ok, ball joints have all been checked (in for wheel alignment next week).

There is no noise from the rack and no noticable leaks so I'm a bit confused as to whats causing this effect? Any ideas would be appreciated.
