Noisy Power Steering Pump, No Evidence of Leaks S70 1998

Dear Brickboard,

The power steering pump on my 1998 S70 (48,600 miles, but out of warranty)suddenly became very noisy - kind of a "whining" sound. It seems to be worse when I turn the wheel, but the sound is always there. I took it to the local dealer and was told that the fluid was low so they topped it off - they also inspected for leaks and found none (I also did not see any leaks). They said that if the noise persisted, I might want to replace with a new power steering pump ($870).

It seemed to quiet down some after I picked up the car from the dealer, but after driving 70 miles on the freeway, it is as noisy as ever, and the fluid seems to have dropped again, but still evidence of a leak.

I searched the archive for similar problems and found that most advice was to top off the the fluid and the problem would go away. Any thoughts? Anyone else needing to replace a power steering pump at 48,000? Thanks,

Arvids
