Air Bags 850

The passenger air bag on our '95 Turbo wagon is apparently shot. I get the 2-2-2 code, and it will not reset. I took it to our local, very trustworthy, shop and they say the unit needs replacing. They also say it may be guanteed. Does anybody know how long Volvo guarantees the airbags? I'd like to, if possible, avoid all or part of the $1,200 cost for the unit! Any other suggestions?

I'm also considering just leaving it disconnected since we are rigorous about using seatbelts.
